New fast food outlets in the Oldham area keen on getting themselves the best deal on everything, including cheap takeaway insurance, are watching out for the introduction of a new law which could see them being fined £1,000 by the local council.
Cheap takeaway insurance to one side for a moment, Oldham councillors are determined to keep new fast food outlets at what they see is a sensible distance from schools. And if that distance, say Oldham Council, is less than 500 metres when the planning application is received, they could end up with a £1,000 fine. Councillors will vote on the idea shortly on approving the planning restrictions which could dictate where such businesses are located in the future. The proposed new rules need legislation before they can be adopted.
Further planning recommendations include a minimum of three shops space between takeaways that are grouped together. This is an attempt by the council to control the number of takeaways in a given area. The council are concerned that a build-up of takeaways is bad for local residents, as well as school children.
So cheap takeaway insurance might be one concern for new takeaways planning to open and operate in Oldham, but that’s obviously not their biggest worry, as location will now become a major issue as well. And although councillors are no doubt rightly concerned about the waist lines of its constituents, it remains to be seen whether they have the legal powers to introduce such rules which, the takeaway industry might see as too draconian.
