The Apprentice – Firing Number Five

It was a case of snatching defeat from the jaws of victory this week as Peruvian hopeful Paloma talked herself into the firing line. In business, insurance is the key as it provides a comfort blanket, but when you can’t see the writing on the wall when the boss is having a rant, then you’ve got to go.

Paloma’s team failed by the narrow margin of £500 to convince Lord Sugar and his acolytes that they were ‘retail gurus.’ Alex is increasingly wearing the mark of Cain, but when Paloma tried to shift the blame squarely on his shoulders (she started well before her team lost), Sugar could smell a rat. But more than that, Paloma was backing the great entrepreneur into a corner and had he fired Alex, it would mean that she had manoeuvred him into making the decision. And with that Paloma, a strong favourite and tipped for the final by none other than chief Sugar cup bearer Nick, was heading for the door.

As said, in business, insurance is vital and Paloma should have known when to keep quiet. As someone said later, when you have two of the weakest candidates either side of you (Alex and Sandeesh), looking like a cowed Bambi and Thumper, you don’t stick the boot in. Had Paloma showed some humility, praised the efforts of the wide eyed Sandeesh, stroked the ego of the ‘irritant’ Alex, then she would have survived for a good few weeks.

Business insurance won’t protect you against the tactics employed by Paloma, but it might make things easier if such characters start to rock the boat.
